Stallholder Profile for Nutty Koala

Stallholder Profile for Nutty Koala

Your name: Gayle Lemmon

Your business name and facebook/website name and link: Nutty Koala
 http://facebook.com/pages/nutty-koala
My web site is still in the production stage.

The suburb/town you live in now: Kewarra Beach, CairnsWhat is it that you make and what skills do you use?: Handmade children's wear - my skills are sewing both by hand and machine and pattern making as l have done a course in children's' pattern design. I  also incorporate some beading into some of my sewing, fabric flowers, hand smocking and  embroidery that is done by machine or by hand.

What inspired you to start your business?: I have always loved sewing and this began at the age of 9, and l went from making dolls clothes to my own clothing.  l even made my mother's outfit for my wedding. After I married l had 4 girls and l began making their outfits, l so loved do this and l took great pride in what l made, but l wanted to go one step further, so l decided to do a pattern making course. This helped me to further develop my sewing skills, as l was able to design and make my own patterns, not to say it also saved me a lot of money.  However, sadly my girls grew up too soon, and no longer would wear my clothes. As l had come too hate sewing adult clothing and there was only so many curtains and cushions that l could have around my house l put my machines away for a while. With daughter number 3 marrying and giving me my first grandchild,  followed by 4 more, l soon had my sewing mojo back......l had a purpose once again......which lead to Nutty Koala being born.

How long have you been creating?: Since l was 9 years old - roughly 51 years worth.

Is it a full time/part time hobby or business?: Part time as l work alongside my husband in his business and 3 days as a receptionist in a Beauty Salon. Would love it too be full time but this is just impossible at the moment.

Where do you sell your creations?: Mostly The Handmade Expo, l do sell a bit online but this is rather slow as l don't have the time to update/maintain my site.

What makes you so special or different?: My children's clothing are all different as l very rarely do lots of the same design, so most are OOAK. I also think of making my outfits easy for mums too dress their little ones so l  make them adjustable such as:  tie shoulder straps on my ruffled rompers that tie as another feature at the back, and adjustable elastic in waistbands that accommodate the growing child.

What is the most rewarding part of what you do?: Getting pictures of  children dressed in my outfits from my clients. Compliments at the markets on my outfits and even on my fabric choices.

What is your favourite product to make?: Ruffled rompers, as l can pretty these up with lace, ruffles and my handmade flowers that l adorn them with to make them very girly.

Do you teach classes or workshops?: Sadly no, as l just don't have the time.

I live in Kewarra Beach in the beautiful northern beaches of Cairns

What is it that you make and what skills do you use?:-
I sell a range of beautiful household and personal products like Microwave Bowl/Plate Holders, Tote Bags, and Coasters etc.  I’m a demon on the sewing machine. I like to see a need and develop or adapt an existing design to produce a new product for my customers.

What inspired you to start your business?:
I have always been into crafts, especially sewing and when I moved to Cairns 4 years ago I became involved in the vibrant craft community up here.  It was a natural progression, and with a  lot of encouragement from new friends I decided to start selling my own handmade items at local Craft Markets.

What is the most rewarding part of what you do?:
When existing customers love your products and recommend them to their friends.

What is your favourite product to make?:
I think it must be my microwave holders, they are my best seller and my customers love them so much. When I sew a new batch I get to wade through a delicious range of fabrics choosing which ones to use…..

Do you teach classes or workshops?:

Not at the moment because I’m so busy sewing but maybe in the future I will.

We make concrete decor such as succulent planter pots of different sizes, drink (wine) coasters, trivets, jewellery cones. We always have new creations in the pipelines!

How long have you been creating?:
Approx 10 months

Is it a full time/part time hobby or business?:
Part time at the moment we are always striving to grow & hopefully one day this be a full time adventure.

Where do you sell your creations? The Handmade Expo! We also currently have two local businesses that stock our products 'Urban Village Homewares Cannonvale' & 'Sushi Yum Yum Proserpine'.
We sell from our Facebook & Instagram pages, our big goal is to get setup regularly at the local markets.

Ipswich Stallholder Profile for Sweet Chilli Onions

Stallholder Profile for Sweet Chilli Onions
https://www.facebook.com/Sweet-Chilli-Onions-470072139669932/

Your name: Sarah Lightowler-Ward

Your Business name and Facebook name and link: Sweet Chilli Onions https://www.facebook.com/Sweet-Chilli-Onions-470072139669932/

The suburb/town you live in now: Forest Lake, Brisbane

What is it that you make and what skills do you use? - I design and make children's toys, I machine, hand sew and knit. I also make children's clothes, printed Vests, Bibs & T-shirts, Cards and Cushions.

What inspired you to start your business? I've always loved sewing ever since I was taught by my Mum and Nan. I made a fancy dress Jester costume in my textiles class at school for my little brother and it was ace, I even made the shoes! I also refuse to spend a fortune on shop bought cards, so I started making them, then toys and now clothing since having my son last year! If I think I can make it, I'll happily give it a go.

How long have you been ‘creating’? Since I was about 10, but I've had Sweet Chilli Onions since 2012.

Is it a full time/ part time/hobby or business? Hobby only at the moment as I'm a full time Project Manager in the aged care construction sector. I love my job and I love my hobby so I don't see things changing anytime soon.

Where do you sell your creations? Online/markets etc:  I sell on etsy, at markets like The Handmade Expo and by word of mouth.

What makes what you do special or different?  I'd say I'm different for a couple of reasons, 1. people assume I sell onions in sweet chilli sauce (no kidding) and I draw my own toy patterns. Every toy is unique (even when using the same pattern), there not quite as perfect as a shop bought item, but then that's what makes them special. Anyone who has a toy of mine knows it's the only one, especially for them.

What is the most rewarding part of what you do? I love to see my customers happy with their purchase and that the kids enjoy what I have made.

What is your favourite product that you make? I have so many favourites, I love my large animal cushions and my current favorite is my lambs!

Do you teach classes or workshops? No, but that doesn't mean I won't. if anyone shows an interest in learning a skill that I can share, I'm more than happy to hold a workshop.
